its because these actors know how to sell their lines with exaggerated body language and the joke becomes more than mere wordplay, but an entire visual and audio experience.

And the thing is the dumb jokes are funny, but I get the feeling if some other actor had said them, they wouldn’t be as funny.

Haha, yeah. One example comes to mind. In the episode Scaredy Dick, Dick is dressed up as a pirate, so Dr. Howard asks him, “So, where are you buccaneers?” And Dick responds, “Under my bucken-hat!” It was hilarious, although the joke was really corny. It’s little things like that that made this show so great.
